got lucky and was able to get close to a male wood duck this morning. they are very skittish so this was a treat as I never got a decent shot of one male-wood-duck by jazz_blues, on Flickr
John if you can get to Smithville they get close. you can also borrow my lens if you need the reach. I have the 600F4 and the nikon 200-500

That's certainly a LOT closer than I've ever been able to get to one. My closest wood duck was about 150 feet away - small in the frame even at 600mm. They are lovely ducks indeed...nice to not only get so close but also to have cooperative sun!
I was never able to get close to them before this and they always flew off before I could get a shot. I was about 12 ft away at times and they didnt care this is the female at 270mm FL on a crop body so equal to about 400mm on a full frame.
