Pretty much the same here... but in a slightly lower range of about 2,000 pics (when I take my full gear). Last year I went iPhone accessories only and ended with around 1,200 pics in my camera roll. As for storage, I have a device that allows me to transfer directly from an SD card onto a portable hard drive. So I bring that if I have my full gear. I generally try to offload the SD card onto my iPad each night and cull then keep the best ones. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
With the data speeds at Disney and the number of photos taken each day, it would take days to upload to cloud storage... Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
I second this, Cloud storage is a no go thanks to Disney's virtually nonexistent WIFI speeds. I had a major issue with this last December and after contacting the Sub-Contractor that Disney uses I discovered that they could really NOT give a SH** about customer problems. I did wind up reporting those conversations with resort management but I'm confident the problem will never be fixed let alone even addressed under the current Disney scheme of "We got your money, we don't have to even try" after the credit card charge clears. Hence yet another reason I am taking my $150 plus per night at Disney and staying off site for @$90 a night. ~Joanie
Do most of you shoot RAW/JPEG? Out of my 64gb SD cards I get about 940 photos. I don’t leave my photos on my laptop because I don’t want to run out of HD
I shoot raw only. I use photo mechanic which has a batch raw to jpeg conversion if I ever need to convert them in large numbers.
Every year after Pixelmania, someone starts a shot count thread so we can all brag. I use the philosophy that the weight of a laptop is much greater than the weight of several terabytes worth of memory cards, so I use the latter and copy them to my PC when I get home. There's little enough time to sleep as it is without wasting half the night uploading memory cards. Raw is always better because "fixing it in post" is easier when you have all of the data to play with, as opposed to the Cliff Notes version of your picture that's available with JPEG.
I shoot raw and I have A super expensive XQD card in my Nikon DSLR so I definitely can't purchase multiples of those. XQD cards are super fast and can write to the card at 11fps with virtually no lag. They are also extremely reliable. I've had the same one for 5+ years with zero hiccups. I'll drag the lap top, no problem. J
I usually shoot JPEG, but only because I don’t do a lot of editing. And the editing I do do () is mainly via my iPad and the various apps I have on it. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I’m not a big editor either, I use my MacBook Pro and use Photos and RAW Power and this is usually enough. I have Affinity Photo, but I don’t like it. Thinking about trying Lightroom. I will probably get a couple more SD cards and just use a different SD card each day.
I just assume he’s bringing 20+ or so 64Gb Cards... . A terabyte’s worth of cards total is what i think he meant. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
My largest CF cards are 16 Gb and my six XQD cards are 32 Gb. So yes, I was emphasizing that a whole stack of memory cards is easier to travel with than a laptop and external drive. Take everything I say with a grain of salt.
as memory has kept decreasing in price, and increasing in card sizes and write speeds, i have steadily added to my card inventory, moving through 16 gb, to 32 gb, and a couple of years ago to 64 gb cards, and then due to sloppy housekeeping on my part, misplacing a card holder with 8 cards in it, and not finding it before pixel mania 2016, and having at the last minute to get a new holder with another 8 cards, i now have 16 64 gb cards, and have recently acquired 4 high speed 64 gb cards, and then 2 128gb cards, because of the 20 frames/second capability of the sony A9, coupled with an untimely and unexpected card full experience at early prepixelmania last year. i have always owned enough cards, starting back in the 16gb cf days, to do a 8-10 day vacation with a card for each day, something i have continued today, even the rare vacations where i drag along the laptop and an external drive, i still keep to the rule, start each day with a freshly formatted card, download that days take while sleeping , easily enough setup with light room, and i shoot in raw, so it is a copy only function, although i slap some keywords onto the files during copying, and usually attach at least a date centric name, sometimes date and day, place, depends on what it was. carrying a 1 terrabyte external drive is easy if you are taking along the laptop, although i rarely bring the laptop these days, i really only consider the laptop if it is one of my epic multiday trips where i would like to do a daily travelogue to here type of thing. i have one of those coming up in may, not sure though if i want to take the laptop, but if i do, the 5 hour return flight from oregon with a first class seat, has enough room and power plugs to allow at least a cull run through what i am pretty sure may be a large number of photos, given that i have 9 full days in the pacific northwest.
I know the prices of the SD cards keep decreasing. I usually hit up Best Buy on Black Friday, they usually have SanDisk 64gb for less then $20. I have never taken my laptop and usually download when I get home. I bring my iPad, but not for any photo editing. I have a 13 inch MacBook Pro, in hindsight I probably should have gotten something bigger or need to invest in a desktop?
not necessarily, best glass first, then cards, i am typing this on a 13 inch Mac Pro, now granted it was brand new in 1/17, has 16 gb ram, i had an a7r2 and was pushing around some large files. i also have a 27 inch 5k monitor hooked up so lightroom is on the mac and the photo is on the 5k. but it would not hurt to have 1 card for each day at disney.
It certainly never happens to me! "Hello, Colonial Camera. Remember me? I'm the one who bought memory cards a couple of years ago and a camera strap last December."
It's time for the most awaited announcement of every October Pixelmania: The Eat to the Beat entertainment for Epcot day is Billy Ocean - again. Just thought you'd like to know.
