I stumbled across a series of very interesting articles on MiceChat.com written by Disney Imagineer Bob Gurr. The one that relates to parking trams is DESIGN: Those Were the Times No. 11 - 1969 Walt Disney World Tram Design. Bob talks about the original trams that failed miserably and gives you the reason why the ones he designed (like 27A) look like they do. He also reveals that they were originally intended to take guests from the Magic Kingdom parking lot all the way to the park entrance. Therefore, they had to be powerful enough to pull a loaded train up the hill at the underpass just south of the Contemporary.
