i made the plunge, i decided to get a 5d, i have a family wedding in bawlmur in oct, and mousefest in dec, plus rhythm & roots music fest over labor day weekend, so i wanted the low light capability, by the time i rented it twice i would have been 20% towards ownership, so i decided it was time, so far i've only been out for a little bit local, 34 images total, but i'm just trying out the controls, tim was right, it's a real easy transition from a 20d due to some family demands and time frame of my day i could really only get out during late morning, not the ideal time for landscapes of beaches and water, but here's one using the 17-40 f/4 L, i like this lens, not everyone thinks it's sharp, it seems good to me i also picked up the 50mm f1.4 usm, a lens not very useful to me on a crop body, but maybe the real deal for the r&r concert lighting at night. i also did a couple using my 300mm f/4 L, a very good lens, i'm really liking the image quality so far i did throw a slight velvia action at this image, i just like pumped up colors this was taken from the small bridge crossing a local creek a couple of miles from my home [This attachment has been purged. Looks great ! I really want to make the jump, too. I was planning on going for 5D with the fall rebates just around the corner, but now I just saw the leak on the 40D and I'm thinking a 40D and some extra lenses might be a better fit. Oh the humanity ! Your shot reminds me why I really want to go full frame, though.
so a few from the backyard around 1900 hours, playing with the 5d and the 50mm f1.4, i'm kind of trying out the new iso settings i now have available, next weeks concert lighting should be a real workout of the higher iso, maybe stage lighting is good at 1000,1250, where with 20d i would have had to jump all the way to 1600 with resultant increase in noise 320-1, backyard from the garage back door, i'm not ready to write off the fuzziness to an unsharp lens, i did all these at f8, but i was tired and sloppy hand holding, i'm hoping to do some tripod testing of this combo this weekend, iso 320 all shots to try this on a very grey almost rain sky 320-2, dusty eating in the round pen 320-3, dollar in the other end of the same pen, colors a little washed out, when this horse is clean and under sunny sky, he's the color of a new penny 320-4, pepper, this old mare is a pure ham for pictures, walks right up to look at the camera and doesn't spook at the shutter sound [This attachment has been purged. Gary - I ordered a 5D with 50mm f/1.4 as well. How do you like the f/1.4 so far ? I wanted to upgrade the f/1.8 I have, but just don't have the cash for the f/1.2, so I figured this was a reasonable option. I couldn't find too many reviews of its performance on the 5D, though. I'm hoping it's just what I need for snapping some shots in some Napa Cellars during an upcoming trip.
so far the lens seems to be pretty good, i'll have a better feel for it after this weekend, rhythm & roots zydeco music festival in charlestown, rhode island. i always take plenty there, and i can get right down close to the stage so i'll get a few close with stage lighting, plus some in the dance tent of the cajun bands tearing it up
I'd love to see them if you want to share. I already ordered the lens, but I won't have a chance to try it out for a little bit. No indoor shooting in the immediate future.
