Well they chose not to respond to Nikon's fall announcements when they could have. Perhaps they needed to retool the 5D's replacement, but all they needed to do was improve the noise and speed and it would have been enough to match! And the prices of the new lenses came out. Canon's new 200/2 IS will be $2k MORE than Nikon's 200/2 VR. Nikon's recent long lenses to get back into the sports shooter market were priced around $1k higher than Canon's. And the 800/5.6 will be $12k. Granted that is A LOT cheaper than the old 1200/5.6, but it's a decent amount more than the 600/4. So we go from the Mk3 fiasco to this....response at PMA. I haven't had the best opportunity to fully test my "white dot" since it was repaired and it better be everything it was supposed to be when I go to Orlando in 9 days or else there will be L glass to be had here.

Why oh why did I have to end up liking wildlife photography.. the most freaking expensive photography there is.. I mean astrophotography is cheaper! I could be getting images of distant galaxies for less than it would cost me to be able to get good images of more distant wild animals. The 400/5.6 is still reasonably priced and is probably the best that I can hope for in the short term, but I don't think it's going to be long enough for the more timid or smaller animals. Still I've heard people say they prefer it for BIF (which appears to mean birds in flight) pictures compared to larger, heavier lenses. It's not entirely fair to compare to two, but it really annoys me that a massive telescope costs less than a decent telephoto lens, or for the price of, say, that 800, I could get a miniature observatory in my back yard (not that it'd be worth much with our light pollution). I understand your frustration, I've been seeing Canon falling behind in feature set for years and have waited for them to show Nikon who's boss.. it's less of a big deal to me, my 30D still does what I want it to, what I crave is major glass, not major features, and that'll take big bucks no matter what brand I'm shooting. But Nikon is starting to look like the luxury line and Canon is starting to look bare bones. Just not priced like that, as you've noted.
I'm surprised that Nikon hasn't done their release for PMA yet. They still have time though. Sony's blog says they haven't finished releasing their line updates yet, and a new rumor says Canon is doing the same - a surprise release. Apparently the 5D was released a month after the 1ds MkII. I just hope they weren't sequestering the items in a penthouse suite at the Monte Carlo.

The viewfinder in some/several/many units is off (rotation) by around 5%, which means the 100% viewfinder is still that, but not on 100% of the image the sensor is seeing. I guess the pentaprism is misaligned. Maybe the now-current rumor that the 7D has been manufactured but Canon held it off for some reason or another is true - I don't think they want to have their entire pro line ending up in the trash heap. But I guess that is the way the camera business is now. Nikon stumbled early on by not getting into the sensor design early enough - so that they are basically out of it, and for not getting on the FF wagon, so Canon gained. Minolta just stumbled and fell flat on their face so they got out of the business. Now it's Canon's turn to fall behind.
Huh.. this is interesting. I used to see posts on dpreview all the time about people claiming that their camera's sensor wasn't straight, they thought their pictures were coming out at a slight angle. Everyone ALWAYS told them that it was all in their head. Could it be that they had alignment issues with their viewfinders as well? I'll just hope that these series of problems serve to spur Canon into working harder in the coming years. Problems with two cameras (their two biggest) in a row should serve as a nice boot to the posterior.
Yeah having LiveView kind of fixes that. You can now tell exactly what the sensor is "seeing". Hopefully Canon will respond, or if Sony releases a prosumer FF, .....
Roger I see that you have gone to the D300 and was wondering about something. I am again attempting to win one of the Coke rewards sweepstakes, (I know I probably won't, but it's nice to dream.) This time it is for a $5000 gift card to be used on a digital camera and a high def camcorder. I was looking at the 40D initially and now have looked at the D300. I was wondering what everyone's opinions were on these two. I know it is totally premature to think about this but I am curious to see everyone's thoughts. Thanks for chiming in and I don't mean to start the proverbial nikon vs. canon fight.
