Filter question

Discussion in 'Digital Cameras & Equipment' started by turtleclanscott, Feb 9, 2010.

  1. I just received a Sony a230 for my birthday, and am really excited. I haven't used a SLR in quite a few years and really miss the flexability that it offers. I still have the filters from my Canon Rebel, but the lens is a different size.

Is there any downside to getting a step up ring and using the filters I already have? It seems a lot cheaper than buying new filters.

The only disadvantage I can think of is you won't be able to use any stock lens hood and lens cap with the filters.

It shouldn't cause any vignetting, but that would be on a lens by lens basis.

I do this with my 77mm filters on my 67mm lenses. ; I bought a couple of extra 77mm lens caps and I'm good to go. ; I don't use lens hoods so no problem there.

Yep...should be no problem stepping up. ; Step-down rings on the other hand might vignette strongly, but step ups to larger filters should be fine. ; As Rog mentioned it may in some cases prevent use of the lens hood - depends on just how much you're stepping up.

i've never had any problems doing this, i buy all my filters in 77mm, and just use step up rings for every other size
