ID requirements at border tightened Canadians only have a few days left to prepare for travel to the United States as the Department of Homeland Security says Americans and Canadians will have to start presenting proof of identity and citizenship to enter the U.S. Currently, a simple oral declaration is usually enough to get you in. But a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security says that's no longer acceptable as of Friday, Feb. 1. "Simply put, oral declarations aren't enough," Amy Kudwa said. Beginning Feb. 1, travellers entering the U.S. don't have to show a passport, although that is one form of acceptable ID. Ms. Kudwa says adults 19 and older will have to show proof of identity and proof of citizenship. Those 18 years old and younger will only have to show proof of citizenship. Acceptable forms of ID include a government-issued birth certificate, a permanent resident card, a driver's licence, an Indian and Northern Affairs identity card or a military ID card.
