I wanted to be able to make some HD video demos of my camera harness product, showing how they work, yada, yada. But instead of buying a dedicated video camera, I decided instead to buy a nice point and shoot still camera that also did HD video. After shopping around for maybe 2 hours online and in local stores, I grabbed up a bundle deal at Best Buy on a Canon Powershot SD1400 IS.

I've only had it for a few hours, and only taken a dozen or so pics with it; I'm still playing around with settings, getting to know the controls, figuring out how to change ISO, white balance, etc. But so far, I like it a lot. It's TINY, and very light, and although the LCD is small, it's very bright and sharp. I think I'm going to enjoy this camera as a daily shot-grabber, and I think the video will be satisfactory, too.

  2. Congratulations! I recently got the SD940 IS which is similar to the 1400. I got the 940 becuase I wanted a small camera to carry around in my purse. Im always seeing things I want to take pictures of but I obviously dont carry around my Xti and my Canon A630 is a bit bulky for everyday carrying around.

Enjoy your new camera. As far as I can tell it does a great job! The pics I took of the fishing guy are with the SD940. Also got a great short video of some speed boats...actually what are those things with the big fans on the back that they take you out on gator tours in?

I think they're called air boats or fan boats. Never been on one, but I've seen them in movies and TV shows enough.

Have you had a chance to use the camera more? ; If so do you like it? ; Hows the video?

I've only used it casually so far, but the stills are quite nice. The smart auto mode is great, and the Program mode seems to work as well as an SLR.

The videos also seem very good. I've only played with it a bit so far, but I intend to use the camera to shoot some YouTube videos for my camera harness, so I'll post one when I get it. I'm just having trouble lighting up my apartment well enough for the camera to shoot without cranking the ISO up to max, which makes the video noisy.
