Here's a set of 4 shots from this morning's lunar eclipse.

I didn't get all the shots I wanted because of cloud cover... at least I get another chance in February. Check out the rest of the gallery here: http://www.pbase.com/msummers/moon

Nice. So that's what it would have looked like if I could've dragged myself out of bed a few hours earlier ? Cool.

What do you use to capture these and what exposure worked best? I took some of the full moon last night but the 200mm (300 with crop) seemed to come up a bit short.

Correction: Just went to your gallery and saw what you did. I was hand holding so I kept blowing out the moon with faster shutter speeds. I did get a couple I will review again tonight. I would like to know what lens you were using though if you don't mind.

Actually, if it wasn't cloudy in your area, it would have been even better. When the moon is completely in the Earth's shadow, the whole thing appears again and is a red-brown shade depending on the atmosphere. You can see a hint of that in the one on the right. Unfortunately, just before that was going to happen the clouds moved in...

I used a D2Xs with the 70-200 f2.8 VR. I cropped each of the 4 individual images a lot before I put them together in photoshop. I'll upload one of the originals when I get home to show you how much I cropped them. I think the two most important factors in those shots working was the quality of the lens and the high resolution of the camera... It would be better to use at least a 400mm with a 2x converter, but I don't have either of those.

    From left to right the exposures were: 1/5s f/22.0 at 200.0mm iso100 1/6s f/10.0 at 200.0mm iso100 1/4s f/10.0 at 200.0mm iso100 1/2s f/8.0 at 190.0mm iso100

Thanks, Michael! Don't you love high megapixel cameras? I looked at my full moon ones and a couple came out pretty good once I zoomed in a little. Your montage is great of the eclipse.
