I have been approached to do some sports photography for a couple of races around Nova Scotia looking for suggestions, comments and insight from people who have done sports photography in the past.

Also curious what gear you used as the standard and what did you take as a just in case?

Races as in running? I have done a local race the last three years. I would recommend a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens. Why Not because of the f/2.8 but because these lenses will focus FAST. The leaders will be stretched out with many bunches of runners behind them. To get individual photos within a group running right at you, you need your camera/lens combo to focus fast as you switch from one person to the next.

Find out what they want from the race. Do they need the start covered, in race photos and/or finish line photos Distance races are very hard for one person to cover.
