Tripod for G12 requesting your suggestions

So, I have come to the very quick realization that I am going to need a tripod for the vast majority of low light shots that I am wanting to do.

I am currently doing research of my own on the topic but there are things to consider that I had not previously considered.

I never really factored in how much a tripod would/could potentially move in a breeze, or it's tip factor. ;

My Requirements:
Sturdy enough to not move in a reasonable breeze
Capable of supporting a larger camera in the future (SLR not as likely as an EVIL in a few years once they further improve)
Folds for locker storage (will be coming with me to Disney World next year)
Something that will not empty my wallet (too much)

i am not home until afternoon at that time i will post a recommendation. i just got a light tripod for my pan gh-2 and it comes with a small ballhead. it should work fine for a future evil. it's a little

 

I saw that other line of discussions but sadly that tripod is not available from my local retailer. ; Also, and forgive my ignorance, but what is the cable release for exactly ?

 

Brother Jay, of you click on the B&H banner, then search for that tripod, they can help you. You can set the currency to Canadian to see what it would cost you, and then at checkout when they know it's shipping to Canada, they can also figure out what duties are involved and handle them for you. That way you'll know exactly what it would cost you before you commit to buying it.

^ Thanks for that, it is something I will consider, but I really prefer to buy all my gear from a retailer that I can take it to immediately if I have any problems.

^^ How long will a tripod typically vibrate after a press? ; My intentions were to at least for the next few months use it with the timer. ; My local Canada's Wonderland will not have fireworks except for 1 or 2 days a season so there is no need to try to capture an immediate or well timed shot at lower light levels - not until I hit Disney I suspect. ;

It is something I would consider, though the super short length of the cable has me concerned. ;

Are all release cables short ?

 

release cables come in varying lengths, canon used to have some upwards of 30 feet long, there are some off brand ones available, but i personally would not buy one unless i knew someone who could vouch for it's compatibility on the same camera model. sometimes the electronics can be quirky on non brand gear


i recently purchased a light aluminum tripod for use with my panasonic gh-2, a mirrorless micro 4/3 sytem i ended up purchasing while looking to replace my canon point n shoot. and ironically it was because i was able to get into the mirrorless body plus a kit lens when looking at the g-12, for around the same pricing
the oben ac-1300, comes with a small detachable ballhead with the manfrotto style quick release, hex wrenches, and a carry bag with an inside pocket and a shoulder strap, all for under $100 american from b&h. it will certainly support your g-12, and a future mirrorless system, in all likelyhood. it will without doubt fit into a disney locker. and has flip lock legs which i prefer at disney for fast foldown and setup

^^ Strange as it may sound. ; Your proof as it were is still better than about 90% of general population photography - or more!

 

I never would have imagined that the IS would have that kind of affect on long exposure shots. But now that I read & think about it, makes sense. Knowing that, I can see how a lot of my long exposure Wishes shots from my last trip weren't as crisp as I would have liked. Now I just need to remember to turn it off on this upcoming trip.

 

Well, just broke down and ordered it from B&H since I cannot find anyone in Canada selling it. ; Don't suppose it comes with a carrying bag for it? ; Saw one in some pictures of it elsewhere but not on the B&H site.
