I am going through my shot from Forsythe today and came across this one (of many tern shots). ; Anyone (Howie) know if they turn their heads upsidedown before their dive? ; Not the greatest shot and cropped alot. [attachimg=1]
That's a first time I've seen a tern doing that too. ; I wonder if maybe he was just about to execute a flip maneuver or turnaround, and you happened to catch it exactly as it was about to begin the movement - maybe the head goes around first like how a cat does when they're falling upside down? Very cool, either way.
I believe I saw some do this today as they went into a dive. They did it in a split second. ; Were you doing a burst as you followed this bird, John? I will see if I can confirm it tomorrow. ; They do some crazy maneuvers when they decide to dive. Check that...it looks like this tern has his neck reversed as the rest of the body looks right-side up.
