Walt Disney Co confirmed its purchase tv broadcast right inauguration

Discussion in 'Disney News, Rumors and Current Events' started by Sheila Gallant-Halloran, Jan 9, 2009.

  1. The Walt Disney Company confirmed its purchase of the television broadcast rights to two events for the inauguration of Barack Obama. The first, a children’s concert that will be attended by Mr. Obama’s daughters, will be shown on the Disney Channel on Jan. 19, the day before the inauguration. The second event, “The Neighborhood Ball: An Inauguration Celebration,” will be broadcast on ABC, which is owned by Disney, on Jan. 20. Of the many balls the new president will attend that night, ABC said, the neighborhood ball would be his first stop.

  2. Disney Channel Plans Kid's Inaugural Coverage

TAMPA - The Disney Channel will air the "Kids' Inaugural: We Are the Future," a Jan. 19 concert honoring military families and hosted by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, the network announced today.

The Disney/ABC Television Group also announced plans to cover President-elect Barack Obama's historic first inaugural ball appearance at his "Neighborhood Ball" and his first dance with Michelle Obama in prime-time on Jan. 20.

The "Kids' Inaugural' concert at the Verizon Center in Washington, DC will air at 8 p.m. Jan. 19. The performers and celebrity guests will be announced soon but the lineup is likely to feature stars from

The Disney Channel such as Miley Cyrus and The Jonas Brothers.

This inaugural concert celebration will be attended by Michelle Obama, Jill Biden and their children.
Anne Sweeney, co-chair, Disney Media Networks, and president Disney/ABC Television Group, said "this is an historic moment in the history of our nation, and we're thrilled to be able to give our viewers and listeners the chance to be center stage during all of the action through these exclusive events."

The "Kids" event will be simulcast on Radio Disney, and will be streamed on Disney.com immediately following the culmination of the telecast on Disney Channel.

  3. Kids' Concert Has Lots of Stars, but No Tickets for Public

Kids' Concert Has Lots of Stars, but No Tickets for Public

And the hitmakers keep coming. Young pop phenoms Miley Cyrus, the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato have signed on to play at a Kids' Inaugural concert Monday evening at Verizon Center, the Presidential Inaugural Committee announced yesterday.

That's good news for Malia and Sasha Obama -- their father says they are fans of the Disney Channel hit series "Hannah Montana," starring Cyrus -- but other parents should dampen their tweens' excitement. Although the concert was previously announced as a free event with tickets required, it evidently won't be open to the screaming masses.

The inaugural committee is handling ticket distribution, and "they have told us to tell callers that no general public tickets are available," said Sheila Francis, Verizon Center's publicity director.

The committee would not comment on ticketing details. But it appears that only preselected groups -- mainly military families -- will be invited. The concert, to be hosted by Michelle Obama and Jill Biden, will be broadcast live on the Disney Channel from 8 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Meanwhile, the talent lineup for an official Neighborhood Ball at the Washington Convention Center was also revealed yesterday: Beyoncé and her husband, Jay-Z, Mary J. Blige, Mariah Carey, Faith Hill, Alicia Keys, Shakira and Stevie Wonder will perform. But, again, no ticketing info was released. That ball, hosted by the newly installed president, will be geared toward Washingtonians, with a portion of tickets set aside for locals.

The committee described it as "the premier event of inauguration evening." The ball will be broadcast on ABC from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. It will feature the president and first lady's first dance of the night.

"I wanted to make sure that we had an event that would be open to our new neighborhood here in Washington, D.C., and also neighborhoods across the country," Obama said in a statement last week.

Music industry insiders say there has been a last-minute scramble to nail down performers for the official balls and events. The lineups for the other nine presidential balls are expected to be announced this week. And the glitz quotient -- in terms of confirmed musical acts and celebrities -- keeps rising. The biggest free public entertainment event will be Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial, a 90-minute concert also featuring Beyoncé, Shakira and Wonder, along with Usher, Bruce Springsteen, U2 and several other stars. Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx and Queen Latifah will give historical readings.

The long inaugural weekend is shaping up as a bonanza for music lovers -- at least those who can score tickets. The rapper Nas, rock guitarist Slash, gospel star Donnie McClurkin and singer-songwriter Josh Groban were among the headliners confirmed yesterday for the nonofficial Heroes Red White & Blue Inaugural Ball, geared toward wounded service members. It will be held at the Warner Theatre, with tickets starting at $250 per person.

Details also were announced for a jazz-centered "Celebration of America" at the Kennedy Center on Monday. The show emerged from a conversation between Wynton Marsalis and former Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor, according to its producers. The talent includes Dave Brubeck, Cassandra Wilson and Dianne Reeves; Angela Bassett will host. Tickets are not available to the public.

  4. Disney Channel To Premiere Jonas Brothers, Miley Cyrus Videos

Leading into its Kids' Inaugural: We Are the Future special on Martin Luther King Day, Disney Channel will premiere new videos from the Jonas Brothers and Miley Cyrus.

Before its special celebrating Barack Obama’s inauguration, Disney Channel will present the world premiere of Grammy Award nominees the Jonas Brothers' music video, Tonight, on Jan. 19. The music video was directed by Bruce Hendricks, director of Walt Disney Studios' upcoming Jonas Brothers-The 3D Concert Experience, feature set to arrive in theaters Feb. 27, 2009. It contains scenes from the 3-D movie, including concert footage, backstage moments and interaction with fans.

Disney, which will air the inauguration special from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. (ET/PT), will debut the first music video from Cyrus' big-screen debut, Walt Disney Pictures' Hannah Montana The Movie. Cyrus will host the video for the song she performs in the movie, Let's Get Crazy. The official trailer of the theatrical, directed by Peter Chelsom, will also bow Monday night
