i went to washington dc the first few days of may, i thought i had been just before covid, but it turns out it's been awhile, so i felt the need to do some repeat stuff. one of the things i always visit on any trip to washington is arlington national cemetery, to witness one of the most reverent and moving military traditions we have, the changing of the guard at the tomb of the unknowns, if i am lucky sometimes i also catch a wreath laying ceremony. a little fact, you will never see any rank higher than buck sergeant in charge of the detail, although this soldier introduced himself as a staff sergeant, notice no bottom rocker such as E-6 would have, plus at least 2 enlistment hash marks on the left sleeve. this is because the us army does not have a corporal rank as a supervisory level, and because the rank of the unknown is just that, unknown, this is done so as not to outrank the honored one. this ceremony moves me everytime. sorry for the left side intrusion, i just could not get a better position, it was class trip time in dc so all the usual stops had crowds of yutes. and the sergeant did reprimand a group at the next guard change for not being respectful enough and making noise.
