These are cropped quite a bit, John. ; I sorely missed the DX crop factor which would have given me an added 200mm to 600mm. ; At f/5.6, the 80-400VR is not a fast lens so I use it when the conditions are right as it was last weekend.
Yep, my 55-300mm is the same, good in ideal conditions. ; I am still considering getting a 1.4x tele for it. ; Borrowed Howie's one day and was amazed at how close my shots were, and not in the best of light either.
The Nikon 80-400VR does not AF with a teleconverter. ; The lost of 1 to 2 stops of light really hurts a slow lens for AF. My ideal replacement lens for the 80-400 would be a 100-500VR AF-S with the same variable aperture of 4.5 to 5.6. ; I think asking for f/4 would probably raise the cost out of my range.
Yep, I was shooting at f/8 at best that day, more like f/11 most of the time. ; I dont know much about lenses, but I can imagine the f/4 has four digits, which is totally not in my realm these days.
John the nikon 300 f4 is also a great lens. with the 1.4 it is 630mm at f 5.6 on the D7000. keep an eye out for one used. the af-s one focuses very fast and it is a very very sharp lens here is a pic I took of Suzy with it wide open http://www.flickr.com/photos/ac209/5948284212/in/set-72157625197642400/lightbox/ I have seen it used for 850 and that was the af-s version

Tripods and Monopods Not Allowed? ; Click below to learn about an alternative. I believe Tim is familiar with the kind of magic I used. No Tripods, No Monopods, No Problems by Scottwdw
Scott, I'm planning a multi-day trip to the Air Force Museum in Dayton, Ohio this fall. This may be the answer to my needs. Heck, if there's nothing available to clamp it to, I can mount it on my cane, and presto, instant monopod. They can't object to that! Erich
I wasn't sure if anyone noticed my new Avatar photo, so I thought I would post this here. Thanks Tim!
You know....you could make some cool long exposure shots and/or videos that way. ; Sort of a Google car for the parks. ; ;D
